When Kennedy finally found his purpose he learned that some assignments would be simple while others would be painful to go through, which he had never experienced because he lived a life of isolation. Ultimately this novel, I am the Messenger, can relate to many people, which can motivate people to find a purpose in life. Although the assignments were vividly harsh it depicts a point that everyone can learn from. Living in isolation does not harm anyone except for yourself but once you live a life full of charity and purpose one can experience life in a positive way. By living a life with these attributes Ed Kennedy evolved into a character that charms his assignments into doing what is right. Neither Ed nor Batman have powers, they both are vigilantes which means that they both have to work harder for being heroes. Furthermore, helping people has a big effect on both them. In Ed's case, helping others help his personal growth. It makes him a better person, and it transforms him. Markus Zusak's character, Ed Kennedy, suffers a transitional transformation when he starts to deliver the messages in the ace cards. Every message that he delivers has an impact in his own life, but it is difficult for him to notice the change he is going through. Before the ace cards, Ed thought that he would never be important, and that he would never be decisive in someone's life. Now, he plays a vital role in this story, and every single message is crucial in his life as well. He even becomes a vigilante. He risks his life, job, and friends just because he is trying to deliver the messages. It is clear that he is trying to do his best for this people. Now, he is an intentional hero; now it is his choice.

He is constantly harangued by his rather hard-nosed mother and lives in the shadow of his dead father's alcoholism. I found that the first person narrative in the story was really well executed and I really enjoyed Ed's affable, self aware voice as well as his detailed descriptions of the character flaws and strengths of his close friends. I am the Messenger has been categorised as a crossover book and I can see it sits across young adult / adult fiction genres. There is a strong message of personal growth and it is also structured and written in a clear way which makes it very readable. I did think that it was clever (if a little contrived) that the chapters corresponded to the suits and numbers of cards in a deck. These manageable chapters along with the conversational tone made for a pacy read. I do think that it managed to avoid being over emotional, however at times the underlying messages of the book were unsubtle and the developing love story hard to miss. Content-wise for the young adult category, I would say that it is probably suited at mid-teen age range.

There is vandalism. "I try to fight them off, but they are too many. I can feel blood crawling across my face, and bruises showing up" (Pg. 179). There is delinquency. "The gunman's gun is pointed at the nose of some poor girl behind the counter. She has a tie a sweat patches to fill the bag with money" (Pag. ). There isn't enough police control.

I Am the Messenger is YA mystery novel written by Australian author Markus Zusak and published in 2002. The novel was released in Australia as The Messenger. Written from the point of view of nineteen-year-old down-on-his-luck cab driver Ed Kennedy, the story follows Ed as he accidentally foils a bank robbery and becomes embroiled in a violent mystery after he receives an unaddressed envelope containing an ace of diamonds with three addresses and times of day written on it. Ed travels to the addresses and helps out the tangled lives of their occupants. Further playing cards appear in his life, and Ed continues to unravel their mysteries. The message of these cards and who is sending them is revealed at the end of the novel in a postmodern twist: The author Zusak himself has been sending Ed on these quests, and Ed is at the heart of the message itself.
